Parts Unknown: Mereologies for Solid Physical Objects

چکیده
When describing a mereological relationship, the use of the word “part” to whole hides the intended semantics of the parthood relations. Existing studies in mereology usually present part of as a general top level mereology relation, and all other mereological relations are sub-relations under it. We present an alternative approach of mereological pluralism, in which each mereological relation corresponds to one characteristic of the solid physical object, and the characteristics are formalized in different modules within an upper ontology. A general suite of upper ontology modules is proposed in this paper to support the specification of the parthood relations for solid physical objects. We name the union of these modules Ontology of Solid Physical Objects (OPO).

Mereology of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships Models
In continuing with the research program initiated by Llored and Harré of exploring the part/whole (mereological) discourses of chemistry, we analyse Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) studies, which are widespread approaches for modeling substances’ properties. The study is carried out by analyzing a particular QSAR model, and it is found that different mereologies are needed:...

• we give a formal model of a large class of mereologies, with simple entities modelled as parts and their relations by connectors; • we show that that class applies to a wide variety of societal infrastructure component domains; • we show that there is a class of CSP channel and process structures that correspond to the class of mereologies where mereology parts become CSP processes and connec...
متن کاملMereological bundle theory
Bundle theory takes objects to be bundles of properties. Some bundle theorists take objects to be bundles of instantiated universals, and some take objects to be bundles of tropes. Tropes are instances of properties: some take instantiated universals to be tropes, while others deny the existence of universals and take tropes to be ontologically fundamental. Historically, the bundling relation h...

In this article we present a method for automatically constructing a solid (in the CAD sense) model of an unknown object from range images. The model acquisition system provides facilities for range image acquisition, solid model construction and model merging: a solid representation is derived from a mesh surface that models the range data from each view, which is then merged with the model bu...
